What is Guru Pradosh Vrat?
Pradosh Vrat is one of the most sacred fasts dedicated to Lord Shiva. It falls on the 13th day of both the dark and bright fortnight of every month. When this 13th day falls on a Thursday, it is called Guru Pradosh Vrat. Thursday is the day of Jupiter, the planet of wisdom and good fortune. This makes Guru Pradosh especially powerful as it combines the divine grace of both Lord Shiva and the blessings of Jupiter.
The word Pradosh refers to the twilight period just before and after sunset. Prayers and worship done during this time are considered far more powerful and effective than at any other hour of the day.

The Story of the Moon God
According to ancient scriptures, Pradosh Vrat was first observed by the Moon God. Due to a curse, the Moon God was afflicted with a severe disease and his light began to fade. Distressed, he went to seek help from great sages who advised him to observe the Pradosh Vrat and worship Lord Shiva with pure devotion during the Pradosh hour.
The Moon God followed this advice with full faith. He fasted on every 13th day and prayed to Lord Shiva during the evening twilight. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him. His disease was cured and his light was fully restored. From that day on, devotees began observing Pradosh Vrat to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva.
The Story of the King of Heaven and the Demon
Long ago, a fierce war broke out between the gods and a powerful demon. When the demon himself entered the battlefield, the gods began to struggle badly. The king of heaven went to his teacher for guidance. His teacher advised him to observe the Guru Pradosh Vrat and worship Lord Shiva with complete devotion during the Pradosh hour on a Thursday.
The king of heaven followed the advice with full faith, kept a strict fast, and performed the worship of Lord Shiva with great devotion. Lord Shiva was immensely pleased and blessed him with divine power and courage. With this grace, the king of heaven defeated the mighty demon and the gods were victorious. From that day, Guru Pradosh Vrat became famous as a fast that destroys all enemies and grants complete victory in life.
