Indira Ekadashi 2026: The Supreme Fast for Ancestral Liberation (Moksha)
Occurring during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the sacred Ashwin month in the heart of Pitru Paksha, Indira Ekadashi is uniquely designated as the single most powerful fast for redeeming departed souls from painful karmic realms.
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, while other Ekadashis grant personal liberation to the one who fasts, Indira Ekadashi allows the devotee to transfer the entire spiritual merit (Punya) of the fast directly to their ancestors, elevating suffering souls from Yamaloka straight into the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu (Vaikuntha Loka).
The Legend of King Indrasena & Sage Narada (Vrat Katha)
In Satya Yuga, a righteous king named Indrasena ruled the kingdom of Mahishmati. One day, the celestial sage Devrishi Narada visited his court with a startling message: "O King! In Yamaloka, I met your departed father. Due to certain unatoned past karmas, he is trapped in the realm of Yama. He has sent a plea that if his noble son Indrasena observes the sacred fast of Indira Ekadashi on Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi, its merit will instantly liberate him!"
Deeply moved, King Indrasena followed Sage Narada's exact instructions. On the morning of Dashami, he bathed in sacred waters. On Ekadashi, he observed a complete waterless fast, performed Shaligram puja, and dedicated all spiritual fruits to his father with the prayer: "May this fast redeem my beloved father."
As soon as the fast was completed, celestial flowers showered from the heavens. King Indrasena witnessed his father ascending to Vaikuntha aboard a radiant divine chariot, and King Indrasena himself ruled happily before attaining liberation.
