Parivartini Ekadashi 2026: The Sacred Cosmic Shift in Chaturmas

Parivartini Ekadashi (also revered as Parsva Ekadashi, Vamana Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi, or Jayanti Ekadashi) is one of the most spiritually charged and auspicious Ekadashis of the entire Vedic calendar. It occurs during the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) of the sacred Bhadrapada month.

According to ancient Puranic texts, during the four holy months of Chaturmas, Supreme Lord Sri Hari Vishnu rests in yogic slumber (Yoga Nidra) upon the cosmic serpent Shesha Naga in the celestial Ocean of Milk (Kshira Sagara). On this sacred day of Parivartini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu changes his resting posture, turning from his left side to his right side (Parsva Parivartana). This cosmic turning shifts celestial energy, dissolving past karmas and ushering in monumental blessings of spiritual illumination and material abundance.

The Divine Appearance of Lord Vamana (Vamana Jayanti Connection)

In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Lord Krishna narrates the supreme glory of this day to King Yudhishthira. This Ekadashi is intrinsically linked with the descent of Lord Vamana, the divine dwarf incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

When the noble Asura King Bali conquered the three worlds, Lord Vishnu took birth as the young Brahmin boy Vamana. Approaching King Bali during his great Ashvamedha Yajna, Lord Vamana requested a humble gift of just three strides of land. With his first step, Vamana covered the entire Earth (Bhu Loka); with his second step, he covered the heavens (Svarga Loka). Humbled by the Lord's cosmic form (Trivikrama), King Bali offered his own head for the third step. Pleased with Bali’s total surrender, Lord Vishnu blessed him with lordship over the netherworld (Sutala Loka) and promised to eternally guard his realm.

Therefore, worshipping both Lord Vishnu and Lord Vamana on Parivartini Ekadashi grants the sacred merit of performing an Ashvamedha Yajna, freeing the devotee from all sins and granting Moksha (spiritual liberation).

Parivartini Ekadashi 2026: Shubh Muhurat & Parana Timings

To reap the complete spiritual fruit of this sacred fast, Astrologer Ms. Swaati Mehrotra advises observing the rituals during the following auspicious time windows:

Key Muhurat Timings:

  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: Morning hours on Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi
  • Auspicious Morning Puja Window (Brahma Muhurat): 04:35 AM to 06:15 AM
  • Abhijit Muhurat: 11:48 AM to 12:38 PM
  • Parana (Fast-Breaking) Window on Dwadashi: Early morning hours following sunrise after Hari Vasara ends

*Note: Never break the Ekadashi fast during Hari Vasara (the first one-fourth period of Dwadashi Tithi).*

Step-by-Step Vrat & Puja Vidhi

  1. Morning Snan & Sankalpa: Wake up during Brahma Muhurat, take a holy bath (ideally adding a drop of Ganga Jal), wear clean yellow or white clothes, and take the solemn pledge (Sankalpa) of fasting.
  2. Panchamrit Abhishekam: Bathe the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu / Shaligram / Lord Vamana with Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar) followed by pure water.
  3. Sacred Offerings: Offer fresh yellow flowers, yellow sandalwood paste (Chandan), Akshata, fragrant incense, a pure cow ghee lamp, and sacred Tulsi leaves (plucked a day prior).
  4. Chanting & Katha: Recite the sacred Vishnu Sahasranama, Purusha Suktam, or chant the 12-syllable Mahamantra: "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times. Read or listen to the Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
  5. Night Vigil (Jagaran): Spend the evening singing bhajans and kirtans in praise of Lord Vishnu. Observing a spiritual vigil on Ekadashi night multiplies the spiritual merit hundredfold.

Essential Fasting Rules & Strict Prohibitions

  • Strict Avoidance of Grains & Rice: Consuming rice, wheat, pulses, barley, or corn on any Ekadashi is strictly forbidden in the Shastras.
  • Satvik Phalahar Diet: For those observing partial fasting (Phalahar), consume fresh fruits, milk, curd, water chestnuts (Singhare ka Atta), buckwheat (Kuttu), and rock salt (Sendha Namak).
  • Mental Discipline: Avoid anger, deceit, negative speech, and unnecessary arguments. Keep the mind absorbed in divine contemplation.
  • Charity (Daan): Donating yellow clothes, umbrellas, curd, jaggery, and food grains to Brahmins or the underprivileged on Dwadashi morning before breaking the fast completes the ritual.

Astrological Benefits of Parivartini Ekadashi
