Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2026: The Grand Culmination of Pitru Paksha
Sarva Pitru Amavasya (also celebrated as Mahalaya Amavasya, Moksha Amavasya, or Pitri Moksha Amavasya) is the sacred 16th and final day of Pitru Paksha. It is the most critical and universally observed ancestral day of the entire Hindu year.
The word "Sarva Pitru" means "For ALL Ancestors." Whether you do not know the exact death Tithi of your deceased relatives, missed performing their annual Shradh, or wish to pay homage to all ancestors up to seven generations (both paternal and maternal lines), performing Tarpan and Pind Daan on Sarva Pitru Amavasya grants the complete merit of all 15 previous days combined.

Step-by-Step Last Day Tarpan & Food Offering Vidhi
1. Kusha Grass & Til Tarpan
Wear a Pavitri ring made of Kusha grass on your right ring finger. Facing South, take water mixed with black sesame seeds (Kala Til), Ganga Jal, and white flowers in a copper vessel. Pour the water slowly through the thumb area (Pitru Teertha) of your right hand while chanting the Pitru Gayatri: "Om Pitruganyaya Vidmahe Jagat Dharine Dheemahi Tanno Pitro Prachodayat."
2. The Pancha Bali Offerings (Fivefold Sacred Shares)
Place five separate satvik food portions on banana or banyan leaves before the family meal:
- Go-Gras: Offered to the holy Cow.
- Shvan Bali: Offered to dogs.
- Kaka Bali: Placed on the roof for crows.
- Deva/Pakshi Bali: Offered to birds in open sky.
- Pipilikadi Bali: Placed near anthills or soil for insects.
3. Evening 16 Deepdaan Ritual (Guiding the Ancestors' Return)
On the evening of Sarva Pitru Amavasya, ancestors prepare to return to Pitru Loka. To illuminate their path, light 16 pure mustard or sesame oil diyas facing South near a Peepal tree, sacred water body, or outside the main entrance of your home. This ensures that ancestors depart in peace, leaving behind unceasing blessings of abundance and protection.
