Sharad Navratri 2026: Invoking Divine Shakti with Auspicious Ghatasthapana
Sharad Navratri (also known as Shardiya Navratri or Maha Navratri) is the most celebrated and spiritually significant of all four seasonal Navratris. Commencing on the first day (Pratipada) of the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) of the Ashwin month, this 9-day festival marks the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of divine righteousness over darkness.
The foundational and most crucial ritual of Navratri is Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana)—the ceremonial invocation of Goddess Durga into a sacred water pot (Kalash). Performing Ghatasthapana during the correct Vedic Shubh Muhurat ensures unhindered spiritual grace, family prosperity, and protection for the entire upcoming year.
Ghatasthapana 2026: Shubh Muhurat & Timings
According to classical Vedic Shastras, Ghatasthapana must be performed during the first one-third of the daytime while Pratipada Tithi prevails, or during the powerful Abhijit Muhurat:
Ghatasthapana Muhurat Windows:
- Pratipada Tithi Commences: Ashwin Shukla Pratipada
- Primary Morning Shubh Muhurat: 06:18 AM to 10:14 AM
- Auspicious Abhijit Muhurat Window: 11:45 AM to 12:35 PM
- Strict Prohibition: Never perform Kalash Sthapana during Chitra Nakshatra or Vaidhriti Yoga without proper astrological sankalpa, and strictly avoid nighttime installations.
Step-by-Step Kalash Sthapana Samagri & Vidhi
1. Essential Samagri (Sacred Ingredients)
- Wide clay pot (Mitti ka Patra) filled with clean, sacred soil and Jau (Barley seeds).
- Copper, brass, or silver Kalash filled with pure water and Ganga Jal.
- 1 Betel nut (Supari), 1 clean coin, whole rice grains (Akshata), and Durva grass.
- 5 or 7 fresh Mango leaves (Aam ke Patte) or Ashoka leaves.
- 1 unbroken raw water Coconut (Nariyal) wrapped in a new red cloth (Chunri) and tied with red sacred thread (Moli / Kalava).
2. The Step-by-Step Sthapana Ritual
- Sowing the Barley (Jau Bowna): Place the clean soil in the clay pot and sow the barley seeds evenly, sprinkling a few drops of water daily. The lush green growth of barley (Khetri) indicates upcoming abundance.
- Preparing the Kalash: Make a sacred Swastika on the Kalash using Kumkum. Fill it with water, add Ganga Jal, Supari, coin, and Akshata.
- Placing Leaves & Coconut: Arrange the mango leaves around the rim of the Kalash, place a small bowl of rice on top, and gently seat the wrapped coconut on the crown of the Kalash facing East/North.
- Lighting the Akhand Jyot: Light a pure cow ghee lamp or sesame oil diya in the Southeast (Agni Kona) corner, chanting the Navarna Mantra: "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche".
