Importance of Guru Purnima

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥

As per Lord Shiva, the guru is also superior to God. The Guru teaches us how to live our lives with all the knowledge we possess. In Hindu Shastra (scriptures), the term "Guru" holds a significant and is considered a revered and respected figure in an individual's spiritual journey. The word "Guru" is derived from Sanskrit and composed of two syllables: "gu" and "ru." The syllable "gu" represents darkness or ignorance. It symbolizes the state of being unaware, deluded, or trapped in the cycle of birth and death. The syllable "ru" signifies darkness dispelling or removal. It represents enlightenment, knowledge, and the ability to lead a seeker from darkness to light.

"Guru" is therefore the one who dispels darkness, removes ignorance, and guides the seeker towards spiritual awakening and liberation. Gurus are spiritual teachers, mentors, and guides who share wisdom, knowledge, and guidance with their disciples.

In Hindu Shastra, the Guru is regarded as having divine grace and the ability to awaken people's spiritual potential. Teachings and practices are transmitted through the Guru, a source of inspiration, a facilitator of spiritual growth.

Adi Shankaracharya, Veda Vyasa, Gautama Maharishi, Narada Muni, Parashurama, Durvasa Rishi, and Dakshinamurti are some of the ancient Hindu Gurus who have left a profound impact on Hindu spiritual and philosophical traditions. Adi Shankaracharya was an 8th-century philosopher and theologian who revitalized Hindu philosophy and established four monastic orders. Veda Vyasa is considered the compiler and categorizer of the Vedas and authored significant texts like the Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana, and the Brahma Sutras. Gautama Maharishi is associated with the Nyaya school of philosophy and his teachings on logic and reasoning. Narada Muni is a divine sage known for his devotion to Lord Vishnu. He is believed to have played a significant role in spreading divine knowledge and inspiring seekers. Parashurama is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and revered as a Guru in Hinduism.

Why we celebrate Guru Purnima

During the Hindu month of Ashadha, Guru Purnima (Vyasa Purnima) falls on the full moon day (Purnima). As Vyasa Purnima marks the birth anniversary of the ancient sage Vyasa, one of the greatest Gurus and the author of epic texts like the Mahabharata, Vedas, and Brahma Sutras, Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima. It is an occasion to commemorate Sage Vyasa's contribution and teachings.

On July 2023 Monday Purnima Tithi begins at 8:21 p.m. on July 02-06-2023 and ends at 05:08 p.m. on July 03-06-2023.

The story of Sage Vyasa and his disciples illustrates the importance of Guru Purnima. This emphasizes humility, selflessness, and knowledge sharing. On Guru Purnima, Sage Vyasa took his disciples to the Ganges banks and asked them to fetch water in a bowl. He asked them to bring it back to him. He then poured the water back into the river, symbolizing their knowledge. This story highlights the importance of humility, selflessness, and knowledge sharing, and serves as a reminder to disciples to imbibe their Gurus' teachings, harmonize their relationships, and cultivate a spirit of service and compassion.

Lord Shiva is considered the Maiden Guru

As per the puran, Lord Shiva is the first Guru and his 2 students were Shani and Parshuram. Lord Shiva is also known as Adidev and Adiguru. The story of Adiguru is associated with the transmission of spiritual knowledge and the initiation of the Guru tradition. Lord Shiva assumed the form of Adiguru, the primal Guru, and imparted profound spiritual teachings to the Devas. His teachings transformed the Devas into enlightened beings, who then disseminated this knowledge to other realms and beings in the universe. Adiguru's teachings inspire disciples to recognize the divine presence within themselves and strive for spiritual evolution, leading to ultimate liberation and union with the Supreme.
